Caught in a COVID conspiracy
Dr Siouxsie Wiles is a microbiologist and bioluminescence enthusiast. She and her team make nasty bacteria glow in the dark to better understand how infectious bacteria evolve and to find new medicines. Siouxsie will talk about her research has led to her being implicated in a COVID conspiracy theory and targeted as a Satanist. Siouxsie will also be moderating the panel “(Mis)information in the time of Covid”.
Microbiologist Dr Siouxsie Wiles heads up the Bioluminescent Superbugs Lab at the University of Auckland. When the pandemic arrived, she joined forces with Spinoff cartoonist Toby Morris to make the science of the pandemic clear and understandable. Their award-winning graphics have been translated into multiple languages and adapted by governments and organisations around the world, including the WHO. Siouxsie was listed by the BBC as one of their 100 influential women of 2020 and in 2021 named Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year.
